Understanding Gender-Based Violence

What is Gender-Based Violence GBV?

refers to harmful acts directed at individuals because of their gender. In situations of conflict and displacement, women and girls often face risks of violence, exploitation, and abuse. Factors like war and vulnerability make these risks more urgent, as they can leave refugees without protection and support.

GBV in Conflict Areas

In conflict-affected regions, the search for safety often places women and girls at greater risk of gender-based violence. Refugee women and girls are particularly vulnerable not only during the chaos of conflict but also in its aftermath, where instability, displacement, and lack of protection mechanisms further expose them to violence and exploitation.

Impact of Displacement

Displacement significantly exacerbates the vulnerability of women and girls, exposing them to a high risk of gender-based violence (GBV), including sexual violence, exploitation, and trafficking. The disruption of family structures, loss of social support networks, and lack of access to basic services contribute to this increased vulnerability

Recognizing Vulnerability

Gender-based violence (GBV) remains one of the most persistent and under-addressed human rights violations in contexts of conflict and displacement. Refugee women and girls, already carrying the deep psychological wounds of war, face ongoing threats of violence not only during their flight to safety but also within the very environments that are intended to offer them protection.
