Introduction

On June 15, 2024, Kafi Abdelkheir Kafi Teim, a dedicated peace and conflict resolution advocate for Trauma Rescue Aid (TRAID), mediated a conflict resolution between the Tulushi tribe and the Tira tribe in the Nuba Mountains. This report provides a detailed account of the incident, the mediation process, and the outcomes achieved through Kafi’s facilitation.

Incident Overview

The conflict arose from an altercation between two young men, one from the Tulushi tribe and the other from the Tira tribe, who were known to be good friends. On the day of the incident, both individuals went out to drink alcohol and carried firearms with them. Around midnight, a misunderstanding occurred between the two, leading to a physical confrontation. Tragically, the young man from the Tulushi tribe shot and instantly killed his friend from the Tira tribe. This incident led to significant tension and demands for compensation from the deceased’s family.

Mediation Process

Kafi and other representatives from the Tulushi tribe engaged with the leaders’ elders and families from both tribes to understand their perspectives and concerns. This was crucial in establishing a foundation of trust and cooperation.

Separate meetings were held with the families of both the victim and the perpetrator to address their grievances, expectations, and the emotional charge of the incident.

A joint meeting session was held the following day, bringing together representatives from both tribes, including the families involved. Kafi facilitated open and respectful dialogue, ensuring each party could express their views and feelings.

The deceased’s family demanded compensation for their loss. Kafi guided the discussion to ensure the compensation amount was fair and acceptable to both parties. The meeting focused on finding a resolution that would honour the victim and provide a sense of justice to his family.

After extensive discussions, an agreement was reached regarding the compensation amount. Both families agreed to the terms, and a formal reconciliation ceremony was conducted. This ceremony included traditional rituals to signify the end of the conflict and the restoration of peace between the two families.

Outcomes and Impact

The conflict was resolved peacefully without further violence or escalation. Both tribes are committed to maintaining harmony and preventing future conflicts, and the agreed-upon compensation amount was paid to the family of the deceased, providing them with some measure of solace and justice.
