Our Approach

Trauma Rescue Aid (TRAID) Initiative is dedicated to sustainably and rebuilding the lives of survivors by laying the foundations for them not only to survive but to thrive. Guided by a grassroots approach to sustainable development, the Initiative collaborates with local communities’ leaders and a network of implementing partners to design, support, and carry out projects that promote holistic recovery and empowerment.

Ongoing Activities at the Refugee Support Centre Seeta, Mukono District

1. Trauma Counseling & Mental Health Support

Many refugees, especially women and young girls, have experienced severe trauma due to sexual violence, torture, and displacement related stress. Our trained counselors and social workers continuously conduct weekly trauma counseling sessions to support their emotional healing and resilience-building.

  • 115 trauma counseling sessions have been conducted in the last three months, and we continue to provide this service to those in need.
  • Through these sessions, survivors gain coping mechanisms to deal with trauma, anxiety, and depression.
  • The sessions also help to restore hope and confidence, allowing survivors to rebuild their lives.

2. English Learning Classes for Adult Refugees

Language is a significant barrier for Sudanese refugees, as most of them speak Arabic and struggle to communicate in English. To address this challenge, we provide English learning classes aimed at improving communication skills, increasing social integration, and enhancing livelihood opportunities.

  • Currently, 119 refugees, primarily women, are enrolled in the program.
  • The classes focus on basic English interactions, and workplace communication.
  • By learning English, refugees gain access to better opportunities and are better equipped to engage with local communities.

3. Family Reconciliation & Conflict Resolution

War and displacement have divided many families, with some family members being affiliated with opposing forces such as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and Sudan Armed Forces (SAF). These affiliations have led to deep tensions and conflicts within refugee families.

  • Our team facilitates mediation sessions to help families resolve conflicts, restore relationships, and promote peace within households.
  • Through guided discussions and counseling, we have helped several families reconcile, reducing the emotional burden of conflict and separation.
  • This initiative plays a vital role in fostering unity, healing wounds, and creating a supportive environment for refugees.

4. Human Rights Advocacy.

TRAID is committed to advocating for the rights of Sudanese refugees and ensuring their protection and access to justice. In collaboration with the Darfur Network for Human Rights (DNHR), we:

  • Document human rights violations affecting Sudanese refugees.
  • Provide legal and human rights awareness to educate refugees about their rights and available protection.
  • Work towards justice and accountability for survivors of violence, including survivors of sexual violence and torture.
  • Raise awareness about refugee rights at national and international levels to push for policy changes and greater protection.

5. Women’s Empowerment & Coping Mechanisms Training.

Women and young girls are among the most vulnerable groups in refugee communities. Many have suffered from sexual violence, exploitation, and loss of stability due to war and displacement.

  • We provide training sessions focused on coping mechanisms, resilience-building strategies, and emotional healing.
  • So far, 89 women and young girls have benefited from these sessions.
  • The training helps women gain confidence, develop self-reliance, and acquire skills to navigate their new environment.
  • Additionally, we create a support network for women, ensuring that they do not feel isolated in their struggles.

6. Medical Referral

Survivors of sexual violence often require immediate medical attention, including treatment for injuries, infections, and other health concerns resulting from their trauma. To ensure that survivors receive the necessary medical care, we work closely with local healthcare providers and partner organizations.

  • We provide medical referrals to ensure survivors have access to sexual and reproductive health care, including testing and prevention services, and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
  • We also collaborate with healthcare providers to offer ongoing support, ensuring that survivors’ medical needs are met with confidentiality and care.

Child-Friendly Space Activities

Children are among the most traumatized and vulnerable in refugee communities. Many have witnessed violence, lost family members, or endured harsh conditions during displacement. To support their emotional well-being, we run weekly child-friendly space (CFS) sessions at our center.

  • 37 refugee children participate in these sessions.
  • Our trained social workers and volunteers provide a safe and supportive environment for children to play, learn, and heal.
  • Activities include art therapy, storytelling, interactive games, and educational activities designed to help children’s express emotions and regain a sense of normalcy.
  • Through these sessions, children develop social skills, build confidence, and overcome the psychological effects of war and displacement.
