Trauma Rescue Aid (TRAID) has been conducting English and trauma counseling classes for Sudanese women refugees in Mukono District, Uganda. These women, who fled conflict and violence in Sudan, have faced various forms of trauma, including the loss of loved ones, destruction of homes, and separation from their communities. Many are now in an unfamiliar land, with limited understanding of the local language, making it even more challenging to integrate into their new environment.

The English classes are designed to help these women learn basic communication skills, easing their integration into Ugandan society and improving their access to essential services. At the same time, the trauma counseling sessions aim to support their emotional and psychological healing, addressing the deep scars left by the atrocities they experienced.

Progress. After one month, the participants have shown significant improvement in basic communication skills, such as greetings, asking for directions, and understanding simple instructions.

Trauma Counseling:

The trauma counseling sessions focus on providing safe spaces where the women shared their experiences and begin the healing process.

Topics covered include coping with grief, dealing with loss, building resilience, and managing stress. Our team of trained counselors uses trauma-informed approaches to ensure that each woman feels supported and heard.

Impact. Many women have reported feeling lighter and more hopeful after attending the counseling sessions. They’ve started to develop coping mechanisms that help them manage their emotions better.
