Southwestern residential neighborhoods of El Fasher
On September 3, 2024, the city of El Fasher experienced a devastating artillery bombardment conducted by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The attack targeted several residential areas, including the Al-Radeef neighborhood, Timbasi, and Al-Riyadh. It also struck shelters for displaced persons located in Al-Ittihad Secondary Schools and Ibn Sina, as well as surrounding homes.
The bombardment has caused significant damage to residential infrastructure and displaced persons’ shelters. Initial reports indicate a high number of casualties and injuries among civilians, including those seeking refuge in the targeted shelters. The assault has exacerbated the plight of already vulnerable communities, resulting in further suffering and insecurity. This act of violence by the Rapid Support Forces against innocent civilians is unequivocally condemned. The deliberate targeting of residential neighborhoods and shelters for displaced persons is a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and basic human rights. Such indiscriminate attacks on civilian areas and essential shelters are unacceptable and inexcusable.
We urgently call on the Rapid Support Forces to immediately cease all bombing operations and refrain from further assaults on civilian areas. Justice must be served for the victims of this senseless violence. The international community must hold those responsible accountable and provide support to the affected communities to ensure their safety and aid in their recovery.
